/ About the project
The main driver for this initiative was to encourage new fans to sign up or existing fans to log in to the Sky Sports mobile app, we want to highlight to users the extra benefits and features available by doing this. General engagement in terms of users was also of interest.
I was one of two senior designers on this project, working closely with my counterpart at every stage. Together, we developed initial surveys, led user testing, and created prototypes that shaped the final experience. We also produced a comprehensive style guide and handover file, ensuring consistency and clarity across the design and development process.

/ Approach
We surveyed boxing fans during live fights to understand their interest and engagement, exploring how a second device could enhance their experience. From this, we developed early ideas focused on the social aspect – allowing fans to score fights and compare results with friends both in-person and online. Usability testing with high-fidelity prototypes helped us refine the designs by observing how users interacted with the experience and UI.
After several rounds of testing, we finalised the design and created a detailed handover file covering different states and modular components, ensuring the system could handle everything from simple polls to complex scorecards.
On the night viewers were prompted by a QR code on the screen, which lead them directly to the Scorecard within the Sky Sports app. Once they log in and submit their score for each round, a graphic on live TV displays the average score given by the home audience. This feature provides an additional talking point for the commentators and allows the audience to compare their scores with others.
/ Results
The trial was a huge success, driving significant traffic to the Sky Sports app and encouraging both new sign-ups and logins from existing users. With support from broadcast graphics and commentators, the initiative boosted engagement and has since become a permanent feature for headline boxing events.
This interactive element now offers fans a new way to engage with live fights. The event saw 44,000 active users, with 80% logging in or signing up, and 72,000 new users interacting with the boxing index page.
